Ron Atkinson, a member (along with Bruce Wildie) of Benzie Central High School's first graduating class, shared his fascinating experiences from Uganda and other African countries.

Ron's first trip to Africa was some 45 years ago, when he traveled to Kenya while a student at Kalamazoo College. Fascinated with Africa, he returned there in 1968 to serve three years in the Peace Corps in Uganda. Since that was when Idi Amin came into power, the stint provided unforgettable memories. On a more pleasant note Ron was fortunate enough to be in South Africa when Nelson Mandella was freed from prison and was elected President.

Ron described the African people as among the kindest that he has met anywhere. Northern Uganda--where Ron is currently working--has just emerged from a 20-year civil war. Ron is helping set up basic education for the thousands who have missed out on school by reason of the civil unrest.
