Pam Darling, Executive Director of the TART Trail in Traverse City, provided an update on the popular new Heritage Trail in Leelanau County.

When complete, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will extend 27 miles from the northern end of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore south through Empire to the Benzie County line at Manning Road.  It is now finished from Glen Arbor to the Dune Climb, and the segment to Empire should be completed by July 1st.

The Trail is being financed with a combination of public and private funds. The current fundraising campaign involves a portion of the Trail north of Glen Arbor and seeks a total of $775,000, 90% of which has been raised.

According to Pam, it is a TART goal to see all of the trails in our area linked together.  Experience with the trail in Suttons Bay shows what a great benefit a trail can be to the local economy.  (Click on the picture for a larger view.)
