Phil and Cindy Cook run Mrs. Mullen's Closet, a nonprofit providing clothing and other items for Benzie County students.

Mrs. Mullen's Closet was started by Dyanne Mullen, a school principal in Hart who made sure that children in her building had appropriate clothing to wear all year round.  Phil Cook, a retired administrator in the Benzie Schools, and his wife Cindy decided that such help was also needed in Benzie County.  Since 2011 Mrs. Mullen's Closet has donated more than $70,000 worth of clothing and other items to kids in our local schools.

Initially the nonprofit supported all four elementary schools in Benzie County, with teachers discreetly identifying students in need of clothes or other items.  When a family emergency has arisen--such as a house fire--the organization has been able to respond with help within 24 hours.  Recently the organization has expanded its service to include students in Benzie County middle schools and high schools.

Much of the support for Mrs. Mullen's Closet has come from Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa.  Crystal Mountain patrons have the opportunity to purchase plaques relecting their support for Mrs. Mullen's Closet that are displayed on the back of chair lifts.  In addition the group's annual fundraiser will be held on November 2nd at Crystal Mountain.
