Anibal Pepper, an M.D. and Rotarian, and wife Ann gave us an update on their recent trip to Peru.

Dr. Pepper is a member of the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS), on whose behalf Dr. Pepper (with much Rotary support) established a burn center in his hometown of Arequipa.  Dr. Pepper has returned to the burn center many times (with medical teams he has put together) to perform reconstructive plastic surgery on burn victims.  Recent trips (such as the 2014 trip attended by several Sunrise Rotarians) have included an educational mission at the Elohim School--a free private school in the slums of Arequipa.

With funds donated by Rotarians and other generous donors the school has been transformed to a three-story school with 340 students (and new plumbing!).  Efforts are now underway there to teach vocation skills. A recent project by the Peppers was to establish a relationship between the Elohim School and Frankfort Elementary School.  As a member commented following Ann's and Anibal's presentation, the Peppers' work in Peru seems like just the sort of international project our club should support.
