Jon Throop, Executive Director of the Benzie Conservation District, provided an update on his organization's activities.
With his slide presentation Jon described how the Conservation District carries out its job of preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Benzie County. The Conservation District educates and empowers the community with respect to the preservation of our resources--both water and land.
With respect to water the District:
- Monitors seven lakes
- Provides outreach to townships
- Updates the PRWPP watershed plan
- Has a Crystal Lake biologist
- Facilitates activities of the Northwest Michigan Watersheds Coalition
The Coalition is particularly helpful to lake associations dealing with aquatic invasive species and other water quality issues. The Conservation District has been a watchdog with regard to a construction project in Honor that involves a wetland.
