With her slide presentation Educator Carla Gipson told of her efforts to bring the international perspective to Benzie Central and many other schools around the world.
Carla wants to help schools to be world leaders in the quest for knowledge and to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education that promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. She has created a handbook giving an overview of the American standards-based curriculum, showing schools how they can outline their quest for academic excellence This should help the schools uniquely provide individualized instruction to students to reach their greatest potential.
Carla says visualize what you want in a school system and design it backward from there. Understanding by Design describes learning as a process of three steps: Acquisition, Meaning Making and Transfer. And three questions can help us grow:
- Where do I come from?
- What are we?
- Where are we going?
Carla asks "What if we figure out how to 'Benz-ify' the American curriculum to ensure a cohesive rigorous and global learning environment?" And what if the work we do helps teachers to:
- Utilize their creativity to design a game or activity, and
- Utilize their expertise of Acquisition, Meaning Making and Transfer, so students can learn how to think, not what to think.
