Marissa Duque is the Director of Development at Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, which seeks to acquire property in Elberta for a proposed park and sanctuary.
A few years ago a 35-acre parcel of property owned by Elberta Land Holding Company was targeted for a large resort development, much to the concern of many Benzie County residents. Fortunately the developer's option to purchase expired and the developer walked away. However, many feel that it is just a matter of time before a similar proposal will be made by another developer. GTRLC says the only way to avoid this is to protect the land in perpetuity.
GTRLC has what it regards as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect the land, contributing to a thriving future and preserving quality of life. But to meet its goal the Conservancy needs help.
GTRLC has entered into a purchase agreement for the property that will expire on December 15, 2024. It must raise $19.5 million to purchase the land. If successful with fundraising for the acquisition, GTRLC will work to raise an additional $8 million to to execute its vision for the area, which includes:
- Nature Sanctuary
- Public Park
- Beach-to-Beach Trail
- Mixed Use Development
