A graduate of Michigan Tech, Leah Wachlin was the first of our two speakers.  She spent a year in the AmeriCorps VISTA program, working behind the scenes with students in Manistee.

As explained in a short video, AmeriCorps is similar to the Peace Corps but is a way to serve this country within the country. The essence of AmeriCorps is to "Get.Things.Done." AmeriCorps volunteers serve from three months to a year, working primarily with non-profits, schools and public agencies.

Leah worked in the AmeriCorps' VISTA program in Manistee. With the help of a mentor she learned how a non-profit works and how the key to success is grit. She organized a career expo and helped students learn to deal with adults.
