Mike Viilo points to a map to illustrate the route he took on his 650-mile walk from Wales to Scotland.

Mike's trip began with a flight to London followed by a train ride to Cardiff.  The first part of the trip walking along the cliffs featured miserable conditions--four days of 40-60 mph wind and temperatures in the low 40's. The remainder of the 38-day trip took Mike across rural Wales, the Yorkshire Dales National Park (with Lake Windermere), the Lake District and Hadrian's Wall, among other spots.  Mike showed photos of many of the landmarks, as well as sheep and other animals he encountered.  (When asked whether he used a walking stick on his treks Mike said yes, noting that the stick's best use was in fending off dogs!)

Since this was the seventh spring walk Mike has taken, he is well aware that logistics are critical in having a successful walk. He has found that he can get by with a backpack weighing 35# if food is not included.  If he is walking in Europe, Mike knows that he will be passing through towns where he can pick up food.  On the other hand he is concerned about the food supply in South America, where his next trip is planned.  On his treks Mike worries only about people--not animals, geography or the weather.  He does not carry a phone or any other electronic device and always meets his wife Bev at the end of his journey.
