After 39 years of service in law enforcement, Benzie County Sheriff Rory Heckman is retiring.

Rory Heckman has been in law enforcement since his graduation from Western Michigan University in the early '70's and has been Benzie County Sheriff since 2009. He described our county as one with big city crime (like two murder cases awaiting trial) along with rural issues (like livestock on Fogg Road in the middle of the night). While the budget for the Sheriff's office has been sharply cut in recent years, Rory has initiated new programs, often using money from grants. One of these is the Lifesaver Program that provides trackable devices for people likely to wander.

Rory provided an update on the various services provided by the Sheriff's office and fielded a number of questions. In the Q&A session Rory was properly thanked for the professionalism that he has brought to the Benzie County Sheriff's office.
