Joe Conger, a Son of the American Revolution, gave us a PowerPoint presentation on the 8th Honorary Citizen of the United States:  Spaniard Bernardo Galvez.
In the early stages of the American revolution Spain maintained a low profile, often operating behind the scenes through intermediaries.  But Spain's aid was immense both financially and militarily. Once Spain entered the war against Great Britain in 1779, Bernardo Galvez raised an army in New Orleans and drove the British out of the Gulf of Mexico. He also captured five British forts in the Lower Mississippi Valley and commanded the troops that defeated the British at Pensacola.

Eventually Galvez became governor of the Louisiana Territory and even had an American city named in his honor: Galveston, Texas.  Who knew?
