Karen Schmidt shares her enthusiasm for the Botanic Garden in the making at the historic Barns Park at the Commons in Traverse City.
A Master Gardener and Charter Board Member of the 501(c)(3) Botanic Garden Society, Karen said the Society already has raised more than $1 million of the $1.5 million goal of its 3-year capital campaign.  Located off of Silver Lake Road, the 25-acre site includes multiple wetlands, wide-open spaces and trees originally planted many years ago by Dr. Munson.  Eventually the park will feature healing gardens, native plants, xeriscape gardens (requiring little water or herbicides) and pleasure gardens.

The large cathedral barn will accommodate 700 people for a meeting , and a nearby amphitheater will be available for concerts and other events.  The foundations from the old horse barn that burned down in the fifties will be utilized for a new walled garden.  When completed over the next 15-20 years the garden will be a wonderful asset for the area.
