Longtime (and present) college basketball coach and former Sunrise Rotarian Eldon Miller is concerned about the effect that big money is having on college sports.

With his many years of coaching experience Eldon is well-qualified to speak about the changes that have occurred in college sports. Recently several big schools have moved out of their old conferences, resulting in a handful of powerful conferences with their own television packages (e.g., the Big Ten Network).  While these conferences want to pay their athletes more, Eldon says that Division 1 athletes on full scholarships already receive significant financial benefits.

Nor does Eldon believe that student athletes are employees of their universities. He regards a pending lawsuit alleging that the NCAA has violated the anti-trust rules as very dangerous.

Despite his concern over the effects of big money, Eldon still believes that athletic competition can be very good for kids.  He told of recent phone calls he had received from two of his former players who had benefited from collegiate athletics not in the NBA but in the business world.  He has always urged his athletes not to look for a job, but rather for a career about which they could be passionate.
