Bob Roelofs told us about the project to honor Benzie County veterans with a new memorial in Benzonia.

A veteran himself and Chairman of Benzie County Veterans Affairs, Bob attended our meeting to spread the word about the veterans memorial to be built at Memorial Park between Grace Road and South Street west of US-31 in Benzonia.  The new memorial will be built at no cost to taxpayers, meaning that the organizing committee must raise $65,000 from sponsors.  The committee has received a $20,000 grant from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, as well $15,000 in other contributions.   So work remains if the memorial is to be built by July as planned.

There are a number of ways to support the project, including the purchase of engraved brick pavers, granite benches, war date tiles, security bollards and trees.  The names of donors contributing $500 or more will be recognized on an engraved name plate. Those interested in honoring those who have served are urged to contact the Benzie County Veteran Affairs Committee at (231) 882-0011, Bob Roelofs at (231) 645-1187 or Kirt Giddis at (231) 631-2373.
